MARA’S is our private and exclusive campsite which can only be booked and accessed by one group at a time. It’s situated in the middle of the farm in a beautiful thick woodland with lovely tall shady trees.
The campsite is unfenced and wonderfully wild with birds flitting around in the trees and curious game wandering in and around it. Built to be eco-friendly, all natural materials have been used so it blends in perfectly with the surrounding woodland.
There is no power at the site, it comes with all the luxury of two lovely family bathrooms with endless hot water (from gas geysers) and proper flush toilets. Both bathrooms are very spacious, and stunningly designed around huge trees. The shower floors are large rocks surrounded by concrete and pebble detail. Latte benches and hooks allow plenty of space to put belongings.
There is a large fireplace and braai grid is situated in the middle of the campsite. It is a wonderful place to sit, around a roaring fire looking up at the stars, and enjoying the sounds of the bush. If you need any wood, hard braai wood is available to purchase on the farm and can be delivered to your campsite.
The washing up area is set to one side in a group of small trees, and has cold water only, but a steel bucket is supplied to put round the fire to heat the washing water.
Kibu hide, a wooden viewing deck built into a huge wild Syringa tree that overlooks Zebra plain and a small waterhole, is situated just above the camp and a few minutes walk. It is a great place for morning tea and a rusk, or sipping on a sundowner.
Hard braai wood and ice are available to purchase on-site.

Campsite info and guidelines
- You will be given a code for the gate, once on Matamba please follow the signs to Mara’s Camp. It is about a 10min drive through the farm to get to the site
- A reminder that check-in is from 12:00 and the gates close at 18:00. We ask everyone to check out at 10:00 so we have enough time to clean the site and bathrooms for the next guests.
- Once you’ve arrived at the site there is no driving around the farm. This is so the wildlife and other guests are not disturbed. We have 5 lovely walking and cycle routes for everyone to enjoy.
- We ask all guests not to play music so that everyone can enjoy the sound of the bush, animals, and birds around them.
- All water at Matamba is pumped from our own boreholes and is perfectly safe to drink, however, it does have a slightly earthy taste.
- Please note there is no collection of firewood from the surrounding area due to the impact this would have on the micro and macroecology of the area. It disrupts the natural cycle and deprives termites of food which in turn affects animals preying on insects like Aardvark.
- During the dry winter months there is a very high fire risk. Please do not leave fires unattended, and extinguish them before going to bed, for a walk or a cycle. If you do start a fire please use the fire beaters to stop it as soon as you can and give us a call so we can deal with it as quickly as possible.
