TAU CAMP is situated in a beautiful open woodland, where Giraffe, Eland, Zebra, Nyala, Sable, Kudu and Impala are commonly found.

The camp is spread over four hectares, with the campsites and the facilities connected by little paths winding through the woodland. It blends beautifully into the surrounding bush, as there are no fences the animals are constantly in and around the campsite, creating the perfect camping experience.

Tau has five individual campsites: Francolin, Hornbill, Drongo, Oriole and Kingfisher. All sites are 150 to 200 metres apart so are very private. Each site can accommodate either a couple or several families from the same group.

All sites have a fireplace and braai grid. There is a tap and a power point for guests to plug in an extension if required in all sites.

The camp offers 4 unusual, spotlessly clean bathrooms. The main bathroom is thatch and has a shower, two toilets, and a plug point for hairdryers or charging mobiles. There is also an outside shower, a separate outside toilet, and a final bathroom which has a thatch roof over the toilet and hand basin with a beautiful outside shower. All these facilities are built around large trees and incorporate existing rocks as the shower floors. An outside shower built under the spreading branches of indigenous trees offers a totally different experience. Showering under the warmth of the African sun, or at night with the twinkling stars and a huge silver moon.

There is a kitchen/wash-up area in the centre of the camp and has two washing sinks, an info area, WiFi access as well as table and chairs for those wishing to swap travelling experiences.

We also have a small splash pool which is situated in the beautiful woodland below the campsite. It has a rustic fence to keep animals and small children out. Surrounded by green lawn with wooden loungers, it is a lovely place to relax, cool off and watch the game wandering past. The pool has a large martini seat, a perfect place to sit and watch the sun setting over the surrounding bush.

All the bathrooms and the kitchen have gas geysers which ensure an endless supply of hot water. The five campsites all share the bathrooms, splash pool and kitchen.

Hard braai wood and ice are available to purchase on-site.

Campsite info and guidelines

  1. You will be given a code for the gate, once on Matamba please follow the signs to Tau Camp. It is about a 5min drive through the farm to get to the site.
  2. A reminder that check-in is from 12:00 and the gates close at 18:00. We ask everyone to check out at 10:00 so we have enough time to clean the site and bathrooms for the next guests.
  3. Once you’ve arrived at the site there is no driving around the farm. This is so the wildlife and other guests are not disturbed. We have 5 lovely walking and cycle routes for everyone to enjoy.
  4. We ask all guests not to play music so that everyone can enjoy the sound of the bush, animals and birds around them.
  5. All water at Matamba is pumped from our own boreholes and is perfectly safe to drink, however, it does have a slightly earthy taste.
  6. Please note there is no collection of firewood from the surrounding area due to the impact this would have on the micro and macroecology of the area. It disrupts the natural cycle and deprives termites of food which in turn affects animals preying on insects like Aardvark.
  7. During the dry winter months there is a very high fire risk. Please do not leave fires unattended, and extinguish them before going to bed, for a walk or a cycle. If you do start a fire please use the fire beaters to stop it as soon as you can and give us a call so we can deal with it as quickly as possible.
